Welcome to the new website of the Irish Prison Education Association (IPEA). The IPEA is the Irish branch of the European Prison Education Association.
The IPEA was established in November 2004 to promote prison education according to the principles set out in the Council of Europe policy document Education in Prison (link to both English and Irish versions). The Aims of the Association are:
- To act as a recognised branch of the European Prison Education Association.
- To promote education in prison according to the Recommendations No. R (89) 12 of the Committee of Ministers to the members states of the Council of Europe (1990)
- To support and assist the professional development of persons involved in education in prison
- To act as an advocate on behalf of educators in Irish prisons
- To support penal reform.

Membership of the Irish Prison Education Association is open to prison educators, administrators, governors, researchers and other professionals whose interests lie in promoting and developing education and related activities in prisons throughout Europe in accordance with the recommendations of the Council of Europe.
